| Course Description | This course surveys key features of the Japanese political system, with a focus on political institutions and agents. The major actors create the structure for the course: the prime minister, the Diet, political parties, the bureaucracy, non-government actors such as big business and the media, and so on (see the class schedule below). Cutting across this course structure, we will examine key issues such as social and demographic change, political reform, administrative reform, foreign policy, national security, fiscal policy, energy, and others of particular interest to students. Tying these together, we will examine the positions that different actors take with respect to policies, as well as the sources of these policy preferences. |
