Course Description | This seminar examines the extent to which Chinese societal actors, from foreign policy experts at universities and think tanks over business representatives to the general public, can still debate and influence China’s foreign policy despite the tightening of authoritarian rule under Xi Jinping. At the end of the course, students will have developed an in-depth understanding of how foreign policy is discussed in China and how China’s foreign policy has changed over the past decade. In addition, they will have acquired a solid overview of China’s political system and the mechanisms of authoritarian rule in China and beyond. Since this course centers around original research, students will learn how to read and evaluate research articles and books. |
