Course Description | This course aims to provide a deeper understanding of the Korean language, culture, society, and history through critical analysis of Korean contemporary popular culture (e.g., music, drama, films, TV shows, advertisements, comic books, and other digital discourses). More specifically, the purposes of the course are twofold: (1) to analyze various sociolinguistic issues represented in contemporary Korean pop culture (e.g., honorifics, dialects, language changes, language variations across gender and generations, language contacts, neologism, slangs) and (2) to develop cultural awareness, critical thinking, digital and media literacy, and multimodal competence in Korean media and popular culture. |
