Course Description Traditional methods of delivering and paying for medical services have proven ineffective in improving quality of care, reducing resource use, and enhancing patient experience. This course will review the theory and empirical evidence on recent innovations in health care delivery and payment models, through the lens of economics and policy analysis. Utilizing a combination of lecture, discussion, and case studies, we will examine the impact of these models on patient health, utilization, and spending outcomes, as well as the potential for unintended consequences.

The following are examples of questions that we will consider: What innovative strategies are employers pursuing to improve the value of care that is delivered to their workers, and do these ideas hold promise for broader health system redesign? How do providers respond to the incentives imposed under alternative payment models and network designs (e.g., episode-based payment, tiered networks)? In a post-COVID-19 environment, will “convenient care” (e.g., retail clinics, telemedicine) continue to grow in popularity? What unmet needs are health care startups and nontraditional players attempting to address?
