Course Description | Decolonizing Europe: History, Memory, Reparations will analyze recent and current debates on the different legacies of slavery and colonialism in Western Europe and in the regions formerly colonized by Europe and on the obligation to provide reparations. We will also discuss collective practices associated with these debates in the fields of politics, law, arts, and higher education. Finally, we will look at four case studies of countries in which these debates have been particularly intense in the last thirty years: the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, and Germany. We will pay special attention to the contribution of historical narratives and of historians to these debates and practices. |
