| Course Description | Students will learn how Western medical knowledge entered Japan, how it intersected with existing traditions such as kanpÅ, and how medicine was mobilized for nation-building, imperial expansion, and war. This course covers topics including the introduction of Western medical knowledge, the modernization and professionalization of medical practices, the advent of colonial medicine, and the ethical challenges of postwar biomedicine. |
