Course Description | This seminar will explore narrative representations of criminality from the late 18th century to the present, drawing on German, French, and American literature with occasional forays into criminology and film. Specific attention will be paid to textual strategies of constructing authenticity, "true crime" fiction, and interrelations of literature, criminology, and law. Discussions and readings will be in English. Texts and films by: Schiller, Kleist, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Poe, Zola, Lombroso, Alfred Döblin, Th. Lessing, Fritz Lang, Capote, and others. |
