Course Description | Animals play a key role in biomedical research, a role that has been ethically contentious and a subject of public controversy in recent decades. Along with biomedical scientists, lawyers, philosophers, and activists, bioethicists have been significant voices in the evolving ethical analysis and debates surrounding the use of animals in research. This course situates the debate on animals as subjects of biomedical research within the broader context of bioethics. Your previous knowledge of the history and philosophy of bioethics, as well as of research ethics and the Institutional Review Board (IRB), will provide a foundation for our course work. Like the IRB, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is a core institutional expression of our ethical values in biomedical research.
