| Course Description | An introduction to the indigenous traditions of Judaism and Christianity in the subcontinent, with attention to historical development, community diversity, cultural patterns, interactions with Hindus and Muslims, and contemporary controversies over caste and conversion. Concluding classes focus on South Asian Jews and Christians in the diaspora, particularly Israel and New York. An academic background in Judaism, or Christianity, or Hinduism / Indian history is highly recommended. |
