Course Description | This survey course introduces students to the histories and documented experiences of African American people in New York. Course materials will include case-studies from urban, suburban, and rural sites and areas throughout New York State, from the colonial era through the Civil Rights era. Topics will include the conditions of freedom and enslavement, emancipation, community building and formation, the significance of social and kin networks, property ownership and citizenship, movement and migration, and environmental justice, among others. |
