| Course Description | This course provides a general introduction to the diverse Buddhist traditions of East Asia. By examining various forms of Buddhism across different times and places, we will consider the extent to which Buddhism (or any religion) is a stable entity with core characteristics, and the degree to which it is shaped by its historical, cultural, and political contexts. We will examine topics such as cosmology, death and rebirth, healing, gender, and religion and the state through various media, including scriptures,philosophical treatises, literature, and art. |
